The base on which the Badger was
built is an M274 A5 Mechanical Mule (which is defined as a 1/2 ton capacity 4x4 platform
utility truck). Vietnam Vets would recognize these little vehicles at once.
They were used for field logistics to carry ammunition, supplies, wounded or even as a
weapon carrier for the 106mm recoilless rifle or the TOW Anti-Tank Missile system.
Since the vehicle was for front line service at the squad, platoon, and company level, it
was designed to have a very low noise signature and body profile. With a gross
weight of 900lbs, and a caring capacity of 1000lbs this seemed an ideal chassis for a
P.A.V. The body, which makes the M274 A5 "Mule" into
the P.A.V. Badger, is a true "Home Depot" special. Wood, laminated and
screwed together form the basic body. Lexan windows of 1/4" thickness
were added, as well as PVC gun ports. Gun position for up to 11 guns were placed on
the body. Standard armament is 7 semi-automatic paintball markers on the MK I
model. Crew compliment was 1 driver and two to three gunners. Development has
passed thru the XM version to the MKIA thru C models. The MK II model with the XM666
"Godzilla Box" marker turret will make its appearance in the spring of 1998.
